Etymology: "Zupans" is simply the plural of "zupan", a noun for a regional governor in several Slavic languages. Its ancestor, reconstructed as Proto-Slavic "županъ", was built from "župa", meaning an area or district, so a zupan was originally the person in charge of a district. The word therefore carries the idea of territory at its core, with the official's authority following from the land he administered.
