Etymology: "Zippy" is about as plain as English gets: it is the adjective "zip" with the suffix "-y", which turns a noun or verb into a word meaning "having the quality of" the base. "Zip" itself came first as a sound-word, imitating a quick hissing or whizzing movement, and from its sense of moving swiftly came the idea of something that moves with zip. The suffix does the same job in many everyday words, such as "soapy", "bumpy" and "chilly", each describing something that has a particular quality. Attaching "-y" to "zip" produced a description of anything quick, energetic or lively, whether a car, a person or a piece of software.
