Etymology: Yuckle is an English dialect name for the green woodpecker, a bird whose loud, ringing call sounds like mocking laughter. The name very likely imitates that cry, much as the better-known "yaffle" does. Dialect speakers gave the bird many such sound-based names, including "yaffle," "eickle," and "hickwall," and the variants in "-kle" and "-ckle" seem to be local reshapings of the same echoic idea.
