Etymology: YouTube was named for a simple pitch: "you" plus "tube," with "tube" being a North American colloquial term for television. The name implies that users themselves supply the television content. The "tube" comes from the glowing cathode-ray picture tubes of older TV sets, a usage that gave the site its wordplay: viewers could become broadcasters. The two halves have very different histories. "You" descends from Old English "ēow," the object form of the second-person plural pronoun, and it reached modern English through Middle English "yow." "Tube" traces back through Middle French "tube" to Latin "tubus," meaning a pipe or hollow cylinder, which is why a television's glass vessel and a subway train could both be called tubes. Note that "youtube" with lowercase letters is simply a misspelling of the site's official capitalised name.
