Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. Units of length each equal to one septillion metres, used to measure enormous astronomical or theoretical distances
  2. Plural measures of length, each representing a quadrillion billion metres, far beyond everyday or even interstellar scales
  3. Multiples of the metre equal to 10 to the power of 24 metres, employed for expressing vast cosmic or physical distances

Etymology: Yotta- is one of the newest metric prefixes, and its name was chosen for arithmetic. It comes from the Greek "okto", meaning eight, because a yottametre is 10 to the power of 24, which is eight groups of three powers of ten. The rest of the word is "metre", from French "mètre", which took its form from the Greek "metron", meaning measure. That same root appears in "thermometer" and "barometer". Yottametres is simply the plural of yottametre, the unit formed by attaching the prefix to the metre.
