Yorks

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. In cricket, bowls a fast ball that pitches right under the batsman's toes, making it hard to hit
  2. Delivers a cricket ball so that it bounces at the batter's feet, a tactic that is difficult to play
  3. Sends a cricket delivery to land directly at the striker's crease end, forcing a defensive response

Etymology: "Yorks" is the third-person singular present form of "york", a cricket verb meaning to bowl a yorker, the fast delivery that pitches right at the batter's feet. The verb is a back-formation from "yorker", so the noun came first and the verb was later made out of it by dropping what looked like an ending. The origin of "yorker" itself is unclear: the word is perhaps imitative, a sound-based coinage echoing the sharp impact of a ball landing at the toe of the bat.
