Yaup

Part of speech: verb, noun

Definitions

  1. To give a sharp, shrill cry or yelp, especially in the dialect of Scotland and northern England
  2. Used of a person or animal that lets out a high, piercing cry in a dialect of northern Britain
  3. To utter a loud, plaintive yelp, as a dog or a child might do when hurt or distressed

Etymology: Old English "gielpan" meant to boast or brag. Over the centuries that sense shifted from loud talk to loud noise, and the same root gave Middle English "yolpen," which led to both "yelp" and "yawp." This word is a variant of that family. In Scots and northern English dialect, the verb means to yelp, bark, or cry out sharply, and the noun names such a cry. A dog or a child is the usual subject, so a swaggering boast has become an animal's bark.
