Etymology: "Yabbied" is the past tense and past participle of "yabby", an Australian term for a freshwater crayfish, and the verb means to catch such crayfish. The noun comes from Wemba-Wemba, an Aboriginal language of south-western Victoria and the Murray River region, where a word "yabij" named the animal. English speakers in Australia took it over, and it has stayed a distinctly Australian word. The crayfish it names is Cherax destructor, a species native to the river systems of south-eastern Australia and widely known as the yabby. Because the animal is common in farm dams and streams, catching yabbies became a familiar pastime, usually done with a line baited with meat and a net, and the verb grew from that everyday activity.
