Etymology: "Worktops" is the plural of "worktop", a compound formed from "work" and "top". The first element, "work", is an Old English word that has long meant labour or a task to be done, while "top" describes the uppermost surface of something. Put together, the sense is simply a surface on which work is carried out, which is why the term naturally came to denote the flat counter in a kitchen where food is prepared. The compound is transparent in a way many English words are not: nothing about it has been worn down by centuries of sound change, so its meaning can be read straight off its parts. The later extension to workshop benches used for assembling or repairing objects follows the same logic, since any level surface where work gets done can be called a worktop.
