Wordmarks

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A logo made purely of a brand's name written in a distinctive typeface, with no accompanying symbol or picture
  2. Stylized text forming a company or product name that serves as its identifying emblem, often in custom lettering
  3. Branded lettering, such as a company's name set in a unique font, used as a recognizable visual identifier

Etymology: "Wordmarks" is the plural of "wordmark," a noun for a logo made entirely of text, such as a company name set in a distinctive typeface with no accompanying symbol. The term is a plain compound of "word" and "mark," the two English words combined to describe a mark that consists of words alone. The "mark" half carries the older sense. A mark in this sense is a visible sign used to identify a product or maker, and it is the same root that gives us trademark. Put beside "word," it names the subset of such signs that are spelled out in letters rather than drawn as pictures or emblems.
