Etymology: "Wiki" comes from Hawaiian, where "wiki wiki" means quick or hurried, and descends from a Proto-Polynesian root with the same sense. The doubled phrase was adopted for WikiWikiWeb, a collaborative website, and "wiki" became the general term for such sites. "Dictionary" has a longer路 path. It traces to Latin "dictiō", a saying or expression, from "dīcō", to say, which goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to show. Medieval Latin "dictionarium" reached English as the Middle English "dixionare" before taking its modern form, and the Latin "-ārius" suffix marks a thing connected with the base. The first word is then joined to the second in English, producing a single compound: wiktionary.
