Wheelable
Part of speech: adjective
Definitions
- Designed to facilitate movement through the use of wheels
- Suitable for transportation and easy handling through wheeled support
- Capable of being transported or rolled by means of wheels
Etymology: "Wheelable" is a plain formation: the noun "wheel" with the suffix "-able," meaning "able to be" or "capable of," so the word means able to roll or be moved on wheels. The suffix has a longer pedigree than the word it is attached to. It descends from Latin "-abilis," which passed through Old French "-able" and entered Middle English, where it became a productive way to form adjectives from verbs and nouns. "Wheel" itself is much older in English. It traces back through Old English "hwēol" to a Proto-Germanic root, and the English word has long been used for the round rotating object, a sense that has driven much of its later figurative use.
