Etymology: "Westies" is the plural of "westie", a short name for the West Highland White Terrier, a small white dog with a dense coat and a fox-like face. The clipped form arose in ordinary speech as owners shortened the breed's long name, and the plural is simply the usual way of referring to several of these dogs at once. The longer name points to its origin. The breed comes from the western Highlands of Scotland, and "West Highland" names the region where it was developed. Its white coat is said to have been prized because it made the dogs easy to tell apart from quarry, a detail worth treating as a traditional explanation rather than a settled fact.
