Etymology: Welwitschias are the plural of "welwitschia", the name of a genus of desert plants, and the genus was named after Friedrich Welwitsch, an Austrian explorer and botanist. Welwitsch was working in Angola, where he found the plant in the Namib Desert region, and botanists honoured him by giving it his name. The word therefore records a person rather than a description. Its form follows the usual pattern for scientific genus names, which are often created from the surname of a collector or researcher. Because the plant is a single genus, the name is used for the plants as a group, and "welwitschias" simply counts individual specimens of it.
