  3. Male inhabitants of Wales, a country in the British Isles with its own language and traditions

Etymology: "Welshmen" is simply the plural of "Welshman," a man born in or associated with Wales. The compound has a plain history: the adjective "Welsh" comes from Old English "welisc," meaning foreign or Romance-speaking, a name the Anglo-Saxons gave to the Britons they pushed westward, and "man" is the ordinary English word for a person. "Welshman" developed from the Middle English form "Walishman," and the plural keeps the irregular "men" ending that English uses for "man" and "women" for "woman."
