Weatherbound

Part of speech: adjective

Definitions

  1. Prevented from moving on or leaving a place because of severe or stormy weather conditions
  2. Held in place or stranded by adverse weather such as heavy snow, fog, or gales
  3. Kept indoors or stopped from journeying by unfavorable climate that makes travel impossible

Etymology: Weatherbound is a plain compound: "weather" joined to "-bound", the same "-bound" found in "icebound" and "windbound," meaning held back or confined by something. A ship kept in harbour by storms was weatherbound, and by extension so is a traveller stuck in place by bad conditions. The word follows the same pattern as those older compounds, with the weather itself as the thing doing the holding.

Synonyms: stormbound, windbound, icebound
