Etymology: Watchfully is a plain formation: the adjective "watchful" with the suffix "-ly" added to turn it into an adverb meaning "in a watchful manner." The adjective itself combines "watch" with "-ful," the suffix meaning "full of," so a watchful person is literally full of watching. The suffix "-ly" has a long ancestry. It descends from an old word meaning "body" or "form," which was used as the second half of compounds such as "like-body" to mean "having the appearance of." Over centuries "-līce" in Old English, later "-ly," wore down into the ordinary adverb ending, so that "watchfully" carries a fragment of the idea of shape or likeness inside it.
