Etymology: "Warehousemen" is simply the plural of "warehouseman," a compound of "warehouse" and "man." The second element is the ordinary English "man," used here in the sense of a male worker, as in "fireman" or "craftsman." "Warehouse" is older and more interesting. It combines "ware," meaning goods or merchandise, with "house," a building, so a warehouse is literally a building for goods. "Ware" traces back to Old English "waru," and the compound appeared in English well before the modern period. The sense of "ware" as goods for sale also survives in words like "software" and "hardware" and in the plural "wares." The job title itself is a plain, transparent formation, which is why its meaning has changed so little. Its parts have always said what the worker does: looks after the goods kept in a house of wares.
