Its meaning of being easily hurt or damaged follows naturally, since a thing full of wounds is already vulnerable to further harm. The same Latin root gave English "vulnerable", through Late Latin "vulnerabilis". The two words are relatives sharing a root rather than one descended from the other. This one is a rare, learned formation, so it is seldom met outside older or specialist writing.
