Etymology: A volery was once a cage or enclosure big enough for birds to fly about in, and the name comes from the idea of flight itself. It descends from French "volière," an aviary, which is built on "voler," to fly, and that verb goes back to Latin "volare," with the same meaning. The same root gave English "volley." That word came from Old French "volée," a flight or a flying, from "voler." A volley of arrows or shot was, in effect, a flight of missiles through the air, and the sense of a sudden burst of many things at once grew from that image.
