Etymology: A vlogger is a video blogger, and the word is a fusion of two older words. "Vlog" is a blend of "video" and "blog": "video" comes from Latin "videō", meaning "I see," while "blog" shortens "weblog," a log kept on the World Wide Web. The "-er" ending, inherited through Old French and Latin from "-ārius," simply marks a person who does something, so a vlogger is literally one who produces vlogs. The result is a word built almost entirely from pieces that were already in use, and its neighbours tell the story of the online age. "Weblog" was a compound of "web" and "log," where "log" carries the sense of a record kept over time, as in a ship's logbook. Shortening that compound to "blog" gave English a clipped new unit, and blending "video" into the same pattern produced "vlog" and then, with the agent suffix, "vlogger."
