Etymology: The word "vlog" is a blend of "video" and "blog," and the blog half is itself a shortened form. "Weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger in 1997 for a frequently updated online journal of links and commentary, and was later clipped by Peter Merholz, who jokingly split it into "we blog" in 1999. The clipped "blog" then became a free-standing noun and, eventually, a verb. Once "blog" was established, "vlog" followed the same pattern: "video" was joined to "blog" to name a blog built around video footage rather than written text. The result is a compound of two shortened or clipped elements, a construction that became common in internet vocabulary around the turn of the millennium.
