Etymology: Latin "vitrum" meant glass, and the word "vitrescent" takes that noun and adds "-escent", a suffix from Latin verbs of becoming, such as "florescere" (to begin to bloom) and "convalescere" (to grow strong again). Put together, the term describes a substance that is turning into glass, or that is taking on glass's hard, brittle, transparent qualities. The suffix does most of the work. Words ending in "-escent" describe a gradual process rather than a finished state: "luminescent" is becoming light-emitting, "phosphorescent" glows afterwards, and "iridescent" shows shifting colours. "Vitrescent" follows the same pattern, so a volcanic lava cooling too quickly into a glassy solid, or a melting mineral slowly turning glassy, would be described this way.
