- Describing elements involved in the nourishment and protection of an embryo, particularly in species that lay eggs
Etymology: "Vitellines" is the plural of "vitelline," which came into English as a learned borrowing from the Latin "vitellīnus," meaning "of a calf" or "of veal," itself derived from "vitellus," a diminutive of "vitulus," calf. The Latin adjective was applied to the yolk because of its yellow colour, which a Latin speaker might liken to the hue of a calf's flesh or hide. Biologists later borrowed the term to describe the yolk-related membranes and layers of eggs, so the word that once referred to young cattle now names the tissues surrounding the yolk in developing embryos.
