Etymology: The name "Visayas" was not coined for the islands as a whole. It comes from Spanish, where "Visayas" is the plural of "bisaya," and that singular form was borrowed from Cebuano "Bisaya," the name of a people of the central Philippines. The Spanish plural reflects the way colonial writers referred to the many islands and their inhabitants together, so the archipelago took its name from the people who lived across it. The term "Bisaya" itself is the word that carried the identity. When Spanish speakers encountered the islands, they adopted a local name for the people and turned it into a plural that could describe a whole region. In the process, a name that began as an ethnic label became the geographic name for an archipelago of several major islands and many smaller ones.
