Etymology: "Virtuosi" is simply the plural of "virtuoso," and the singular carries the story. Its root, Latin "virtus," originally meant manly courage or excellence, and it comes from "vir," meaning "man." So the core sense was a quality of a man of worth, and the word moved from there toward general moral goodness. Italian took the idea and turned it toward skill. From Late Latin "virtuosus," meaning "virtuous," Italian formed "virtuoso," and by the time it reached English it described a person who was accomplished in the arts, especially music, rather than a person of moral excellence. The same adjective thus split into two words in English: "virtuous" kept the moral sense, while "virtuoso" took the artistic one.
