Etymology: The Sumerian star-name that became the Virgo constellation shows the sky's oldest picture of a harvest. Mesopotamian astronomers called this group of stars "seed furrow," in Akkadian "absinnu," and in Sumerian "mulABSIN3," a figure associated with Shala, the goddess of grain, shown holding an ear of corn. Nothing about a maiden was present in that original image; the figure was a fertility and harvest deity. The shift to a young woman came later, through Greek. When the constellation was adopted into Greek star lore, it was named "parthenos," meaning "virgin," and the Latin word "virgo" was a direct translation, or calque, of that Greek name. The idea of a chaste maiden was therefore added by translation and reinterpretation rather than being part of the original Mesopotamian figure. The Latin "virgo" also gave English its doublet "virgin," the two words sharing a single ancestor but reaching English by different routes: one through the learned Latin tradition, the other through older French channels.
