Etymology: "Violative" is a plain formation: the verb "violate" with the adjective-forming suffix "-ive" added to it. "Violate" itself came into English from Latin "violare", meaning to treat with force or outrage, and the sense of breaking a rule or agreement grew out of that idea of doing violence to something. "Violative" carries that meaning into an adjective, describing an act, practice or condition that breaks a law, rule or agreement.
