Etymology: "Vinology" is a deliberately constructed word: it joins the Latin "vinum", meaning wine, to the English suffix "-ology", which signals a field of study. The suffix itself has a longer and more roundabout route than the word it sits on. It descends from Ancient Greek "lógos", meaning word, reason or discourse, which became the "-logia" used in Greek to name branches of knowledge. Latin borrowed it, French passed it along as "-logie", and English took it in as "-logy". Once English had "-ology", it became a productive tool for naming sciences, so coining a study-of-something word was a matter of attaching the suffix to whatever noun was needed. Here the noun is "vinum", the Latin word for wine, which also gave English "wine" through Germanic borrowing in Old English.
