Videotronics
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- The branch of electronics concerned with the circuits and components that make video equipment work
- Electronic engineering applied to the recording, processing and display of video signals
- The electronic systems and devices that handle picture and video signal production in equipment
Etymology: "Videotronics" blends two parts. The first, "video", comes from the Latin verb "videre", "to see", whose first-person form "video" ("I see") became the English word for moving pictures and their technology. The second, "-tronics", is a clipped form of "electronics", and "electron" was itself built from the Greek "ēlektron", "amber", the substance in which static electricity was first observed. Together the parts describe electronic video. The "-tronics" ending is a familiar modern pattern: it attaches to a noun to name a field of electronic devices or techniques. So the word reads as the study or industry of electronic picture-making, rather than as a description of any single machine.
