Etymology: "Videotaped" is the past tense and past participle of "videotape," so it borrows its whole history from that verb. "Videotape" is a compound of "video" and "tape," and its first part comes from the Latin "videre," meaning "to see." The second part is the ordinary English word for a thin strip of magnetic or plastic material, used for recording. The combined word was a trademark of the media company Ampex before it became a general term, a common path for brand names that end up describing a whole category of product. Once a company's name for its recording medium spread through everyday speech, people began using "videotape" as a verb, and "videotaped" followed as its past form.
