Etymology: "Vibes" is the plural of "vibe," which was clipped from "vibration" (and similar words like "vibrator") by dropping the ending. The clipping is an apocopic form, meaning the word was shortened at the end, a process that produces many informal English words. The modern sense of the feeling a person, place or situation gives off grew out of the older idea of a physical quiver or pulse. Using "vibration" to describe a mood took the word from the physical world of sound and motion into the emotional one, so a room could have "good vibrations" in the same way a string could vibrate. The plural form is the one that has become standard in everyday speech.
