Etymology: The pigment's name carries a small, strange creature in it. Vermilion descends from Latin "vermiculus," meaning "little worm," a diminutive of "vermis." The worm in question was not a worm at all but Kermes vermilio, a scale insect whose dried bodies yielded a crimson dye. The name passed through Vulgar Latin and Old French "vermeil" and "vermeillon" before reaching Middle English as "vermelioun," and it displaced the native Old English term "bōcrēad" for the colour. The verb "vermilioning" is simply vermilion with the "-ing" ending added, so the word describes the practice of applying that pigment. Its bright red sense has been preserved in the name through all those languages, even though the insect it was named after has long since been overshadowed by the mineral and synthetic pigments that replaced it.
