Etymology: "Verbifies" is the third-person singular present of "verbify", which turns a noun, adjective or other word into a verb. The ending "-ify" comes through Old French "-ifier" from Latin "-ificare", a formation built from "-ficus" (making) and "-i-", a connecting vowel. The Latin pattern was common in medieval and later Latin, and it entered English through Middle English "-ifien", which was used for verbs like "beautify" and "glorify". English then made "-ify" productive for almost any base word. "Verbify" is itself an example of this process, formed from the noun "verb" plus the suffix. The verb is a word about words, so the coinage has a neat recursive quality: it describes the very process by which new verbs are made, and it is built by applying that process to "verb" itself.
