Etymology: "Venues" is the plural of "venue," which entered English in Middle English as "venu," borrowed from Old French "venue." That French word was the feminine past participle of "venir," meaning "to come," so its original sense was simply "a coming" or an arrival. The sense of a meeting place took shape later, as an arrival at a particular spot where people gathered. Over time, a place where a gathering was expected came to be the place itself. The word has a close relative in English: "veny," a doublet of "venue" that came into the language along a parallel route from the same French source. Both trace back to the same verb, so their shared ancestry shows in their forms even though they have settled into different uses.
