Etymology: The name Venezuela means "little Venice," and it was coined by Italian-speaking explorers who saw something in the lake region of the country's northwest that reminded them of home. Along the shores of Lake Maracaibo, Indigenous communities built houses on stilts over the water, and the sight of these raised dwellings along the lagoon struck the visitors as similar to the canal city they knew. The Italian diminutive "Veneziola" was then adopted into Spanish as "Venezuela," the form that became the country's official name. The word thus records a moment of European first contact, when a landscape was described through a comparison to an architecture familiar to the observers rather than through any name the local peoples had given it.
