Etymology: The vedalia beetle is a ladybird that became famous for saving California's citrus groves. In the 1880s, cottony cushion scale, an insect imported from Australia, was devastating orange orchards, and the vedalia, a predator from the same region, was brought in to control it. Its name comes from the genus Vedalia, the group in which the species was once classified, which was later reassigned to other genera. The name thus records a taxonomic accident. Scientists first placed the beetle in a genus named Vedalia, and that label stuck to the common name even after the beetle moved to a different classification. Ladybirds are a useful reminder that a species' everyday name can outlive the scientific system that produced it.
