Vectorized
Part of speech: adjective, verb
Definitions
- Transformed into or expressed as vectors for mathematical or computational efficiency; processed using vector operations in programming or data analysis; converted into a format that emphasizes magnitude and direction representation
- Represented or manipulated as arrays or sequences of numerical values for optimized calculations; encoded in a manner suitable for vector processing units in computing; expressed with components that denote both size and orientation
- Adapted into vector form to facilitate linear algebraic computation or graphic rendering; handled in a way that exploits parallel processing capabilities; rendered into a structure highlighting directional and quantitative attributes
Etymology: "Vectorized" is the past tense and past participle of "vectorize", which is simply "vector" with the suffix "-ize" added. The noun "vector" was borrowed into English from Latin "vector", meaning "carrier" or "bearer", a derivative of "vehere", "to carry". The Latin root sense of carrying survives in the modern mathematical meaning: a vector is something that carries a quantity along a direction, and to vectorize is to rewrite a problem in those terms. The "-ize" ending comes through Late Latin "-izare" and Greek "-izein", and it forms verbs meaning "to make into" or "to treat in the manner of". Applied to "vector", it produces a verb for converting something into vector form, which is why the word is largely a product of modern computing and mathematics rather than older English.
