Etymology: "Vases" is simply the plural of "vase," so its history is that of the singular. English took the word from Middle French "vase," which in turn came from Latin "vās," meaning a vessel, container or receptacle of any kind. The Latin word is the same source that gave English "vas," a doublet that kept the older, more general sense of a bodily duct or vessel, while "vase" narrowed over time to the ornamental jars we now associate with flowers.
