Etymology: The Vascones were a people recorded by Roman writers in the northern Iberian Peninsula, in the region of the western Pyrenees, roughly the area that later became Navarre and the Basque lands. Their name survives in Latin sources such as Pliny and Ptolemy, and it is generally connected to the later Basque-speaking population, though scholars debate how directly the two are linked. The Roman sources give little detail about their language, so what we know of it comes mostly from later evidence and reconstruction. The name itself is usually traced to the Latin "Vasco" or "Vascones," with the Basque self-name "Euskal" (and "Euskaldun" for a speaker) being a separate, native word. The English plural "Vasconians" is a late learned formation, adding the English plural to a Latinate stem, and it is rare in print compared with "Basques." The word is best read as a scholarly label for the ancient people rather than a term used by the people themselves.
