Etymology: "Vape" is a clipping of "vaporizer," which itself combines "vapor" with the suffix "-izer," so the past tense "vaped" simply follows the verb's regular pattern. The root "vapor" traces back through Latin "vapor," meaning steam or breath, and was borrowed into English from Old French "vapeur" and Middle English "vapour." Its ancestry reaches back to the Proto-Italic "*kwapōs," which is also the ancestor of the Latin word, so the same ancient idea of rising mist or breath runs through the whole chain. The suffix does the most work. "-ize" descends from the Ancient Greek "-ízō," which formed verbs meaning "to make" or "to treat in a certain way," passing through Late Latin "-izō" and Middle French "-iser" before reaching English. "Vaporize" therefore means, literally, to turn into vapor, and "vaporizer" is the device that does this. Shortening that device name to "vape" happened later, and the clipped form then supplied the verb "vaped."
