Etymology: The story here is really the story of a people, the Vandals, whose name became a common noun. The Vandals were a Germanic people who sacked Rome in 455 CE, an event that Roman writers and later Enlightenment historians painted as wanton destruction. In the late 1700s, the French priest Henri Grégoire coined "vandalisme" to describe the deliberate smashing of art and monuments during the Revolution, and English adopted the idea in the early 19th century as "vandalise," with "vandalism" following it. The word "vandalisation" is simply the noun formed from that verb, the "-ation" ending turning the act of vandalising into a named event.
