Etymology: Spanish speakers in the American Southwest gave English one of its most cheerful exit commands. "Vamos" means "we go" and "vámonos" means "let's go," and the form that reached English, sounding out as "vamoose," was an alteration of one of these. The English word then took on a life of its own, shifting from a phrase borrowed in a foreign tongue to a verb that means to leave quickly, often to escape trouble. The word is a doublet of "namous," another English form that came from the same Spanish source, so two versions of one phrase settled into the language side by side. "Vamose" is simply an alternative spelling of "vamoose," which is the form most dictionaries prefer.
