Etymology: Uroscopists are the plural of "uroscopist", which is the form of the word that names the people themselves. The word is built from "uroscopy", the practice of examining urine to diagnose illness, and the suffix "-ist", which marks a person who practises or specialises in something. So an uroscopist is, literally, someone who practises uroscopy. The first half of the word goes back to Greek. "Ouron" meant urine, and "skopein" meant to look at or examine, so uroscopy is simply "urine-looking". Physicians once judged a patient's health largely by the colour, clarity and smell of a urine sample, and that visual inspection gave the practice its name.
