Etymology: In Latin, "urbs" meant "city," and it was most often used for Rome itself, so that "urbs" alone was the Romans' way of saying "the City." The ablative form, "urbe," meaning "in or from the city," is the form that English has adopted as a noun for a large urban area. The same Latin root gave English a family of words that range from city walls to good manners. "Urban" comes directly from the Latin adjective "urbanus," meaning "of the city." "Urbane," meaning polished and sophisticated, comes from that same adjective, reflecting the old assumption that city life brought refinement. "Suburb" comes from Latin "suburbium," the area just beyond the city.
