Etymology: "Urbanitas" is a Latin noun, the abstract form of "urbanus," meaning "of the city," itself derived from "urbs," "city." Its original sense was not refinement but place: the quality of being in Rome as opposed to the countryside, and by extension the polish that Romans associated with the capital. Cicero and other writers used it to describe wit, courtesy, and the easy manners of educated town life, often setting it against the perceived bluntness of rustics. The English word "urbanity" came into use in the 16th century, borrowed directly from Latin, and it kept much of that original contrast. Its sense of a smooth, polished politeness, rather than simple residence in a town, developed in English over time. The modern meaning of "urbanity" in English therefore retains the Roman idea that good manners are learned in cities and sharpened by conversation.
