Etymology: The Greek "ouranos" usually means "sky," but in medical Greek it also named the roof of the mouth, the palate, probably from its arched shape. That is the root that gives this surgical term its meaning. A uranoplasty repairs the hard palate, most often a cleft palate, by reconstructing it. The word is a modern medical coinage built from classical parts. "Ouranos" supplies the palate, "plastos" ("moulded, formed," from Greek "plassein," to mould) supplies the idea of reconstructive shaping, and the English "-y" makes it a noun for the procedure. "Uranoplasties" is simply the plural, one term for each operation performed.
