Etymology: "Upturned" is a plain compound: "up" joined to "turned", the past participle of "turn," which comes from Old English "tyrnan" and ultimately from Latin "tornus," a lathe or turning tool. Its sense of an object rotated so that its top faces upward, or the reverse of what it was, follows directly from that compound. The "up-" element does most of the work here. It sharpens "turned" into a specific direction, so "upturned" describes something whose underside has been brought into the air and whose top now faces the sky. The same pattern produces "upended," "upset," and "upright," all built on up- plus a verb or adjective.
