Etymology: "Upthread" is a compound of "up" and "thread", and its sense comes from the image of a long online discussion as a single woven strand. "Thread" in the sense of a connected series of messages or comments on a forum or mailing list grew out of its older meaning of a fine twisted filament of yarn, and the metaphor of following a line of talk from beginning to end made the word a natural fit for conversations that could be scrolled through. The "up" in the compound points back along that line, toward the earlier part of the exchange, so "upthread" means earlier in the discussion, as opposed to "downthread," which points forward to later replies.
