Etymology: "Uppercased" is the past tense and past participle of "uppercase," meaning to set text in capital letters. "Uppercase" is a compound of "upper" and "case," and the "case" is the printer's type case. Compositors kept metal type in a wooden tray divided into compartments, and the capital letters were kept in the upper of the two cases, while small letters went in the lower. Setting text in capitals thus meant reaching into the upper case, and the trade's vocabulary eventually became ordinary English.
